Mom, Thank You For Everything

After spending a lovely weekend with my mom, I wanted to take a moment to talk, you guessed it, my mom. Yes, Mother's Day is a "Hallmark Holiday," and yes, I hate that for some it is a day full of pain, sadness, or any other mixture of emotions; still, I love the opportunity to thank my mom and reflect on everything she has done and continues to do for me.

Once upon a time

Once upon a time

Being my mom, can't be a picnic. Obviously I'm perfect (lol) but let's be real, I have my flaws, self-doubt, can be sharp with my tongue, and who is there at all hours of the day and night to listen? My mom (and my Dad, it's just not Father's Day). From sitting on my bed with me in 7th grade as I cried about being only 5 feet tall, to cheering loud as I got my hood at law school graduation, from braiding my hair and treating me to wardrobe pieces that were way too expensive but I just HAD to have, to being a sounding board on boys and work, she is my forever manicure/pedicure and rom com date, and the reason why I can sniff out a bakery anywhere in the world.

As I get older, my relationship with my mom has, of course, changed. I no longer rely on her (or Dad) for my day-to-day needs, and yet not a day goes by that I don't want her/Dad's advice on something and it often goes both ways. Being able to become peers-ish with your parents, is one of the great privileges of growing older. Realizing that they don't know all the answers, that really, they're just like you, is both shocking and inspiring. Parents, they're just people. They figured it out, and you can and will too. Still, my mom will always be legendary. Everyone who knows my mom has told me that I am so lucky, and I am, even when she drives me crazy :) I don't know if I'll ever have kids. I think I'd like to, but I'm not sure and to be honest, as I get older and still have yet to find the right person, it gets harder to imagine. If I do have the privilege of being a mom or stepmom, I hope that I make my child feel as loved and supported as my mom has always made me feel. I hope to instill the unwavering knowledge that no matter what path he, she, or zhe chooses, I will be there for every step and stumble.
